Feb 5, 2020 · Agreed. Whereas most 0w30 and 5w30 have the same KV100 and KV40 0W20 departs in ILSAC and ACEA A1 with the lower margin KV40 and allowed higher moly (teost FAIL allowance) than 5W20. 5W20 EP and dexos are very close to lower margin xw30 grade.

The chosen winter rating will be dependent on your expected starting conditions, if it is below -35F or so then an oil with a 0W winter rating will be beneficial. If it is above 0F then any winter rating is acceptable.
Dec 3, 2015 · If your car is specced for 0W20, then that's probably best. The 0W20, due to it's lower viscosity will take longer to come up to operating temperature, as there's less power loss due to shearing the lower viscosity oil. the 0W30 won't hold onto heat any longer than the 0W20 (within reason).

I have run 0W30, 5W20, 5W30, and 10W30 in my Crown Vic down here and I get the best all around performance from the 10W30 (based on used oil analysis numbers). The 0W30 might make sense in Minnesota where it would flow well under supercold start conditions.
Jan 8, 2007 · At full operating temperature the viscosity difference between the average 20 and 30 wt. oils is nil. At 120 F and below the 20 wt. oils out perform the 30 wt. oils. It takes a good 10 to 15 minutes of driving to get the oil temperature up to 120 F even though your water temperature gets up there in a minute or two.
Apr 9, 2023 · 0W-30 has a slightly lower HTHSV of 3.0cP vs 3.1cP for 5W-30. This compensates for the slightly lower VI 0W-30 that would otherwise result in heavier oil at normal hot temperatures. Mobil 0w30 oil is best for cold temperatures. Mobil 0W30 is relatively new but it meets GM spec 4718M as marked on the back of the bottle.
Dec 7, 2017 · 0w20 mainly synthetic while 5w20 may have synthetic and blend. So depend on brand and its composition, 0w20 may be better than 5w20. Traditional 5w20 that protect better than 0w20 is redline, for mobil 1 believe their 0w20 is better than 5w20
Feb 15, 2013 · 0w20 oil is thinner then 5w20 or 5w30 at all temps. (better mileage, especially with lots of short trips) To get a 0w20 oil companies have to use very good base oils. Some 0w20 oils have higher hths scores then 5w30.

Mar 21, 2012 · Keep using that oil. I live i Alabama where humidity make you think several times of year to kill yourself and temperature goes often to 110. In 1.8T I always used Castrol 0W30 (GC) which is thick 30 oil, but still much thinner than Mobil 1. Never had issues and served me much better than Castrol 5W40.

Jan 25, 2023 · If you don't have oil consumption issues then sure, go for something like Castrol EDGE Euro 0W-30 API SL. It will protect better than your run of the mill 0W-20. Mobil 1 AFE 0W-20 vs Mobil 1 AFE 0W-30? Not that much of a difference. Bottom line: you have to be more specific, otherwise your question is meaningless.
